Reading offers immense benefits for language acquisition and even academic learning. Studies indicate that children who cultivate reading habits from an early age demonstrate enhanced brain development and communication skills. To boost student’s motivation and interest in reading, a group of Chinese language teachers at Sau Ming Primary School introduced children’s books into the regular curriculum in 2011, pioneering an initiative to enhance language literacy, inspire creativity and nurture mental well-being through children’s books.

Over the past decade, the children’s book program has evolved significantly, enriched by innovative activities such as cross-subject reading, book crossing and children’s book field trips. Results were remarkable. Students take ownership in their learning and become more confident, while teachers are satisfied with the learning approach. Furthermore, the teacher-student dynamic has subtly transformed, shifting from traditional one-way teaching to mutual sharing. Learning is no longer restricted to “teach” and “learn.”
